MAKARA SANKRANTI / PONGAL
Tuesday, January 14, 2025 Sankranti/Pongal is one of the few notable festivals which follows solar calendar as opposed to the lunar calendar. It marks the transition of Lord Surya Narayana to Makhara Rasi. It also denotes the end of Dakshinayanam (movement of Sun towards south) and beginning of Uttarayanam (movement of Sun towards North). This can be seen as the days start getting longer. This transition is considered very holy and devotees mark the event by bathing in sacred rivers and thank Lord Surya Narayana. Southern parts of India celebrate it as “Thanksgiving” after harvest. |
